My journey into lifestyle medicine probably took shape in medical school. Dr. Gillian Bice, a favorite professor, shared the 2009 Potsdam study emphasizing a whopping 80% reduction in developing deadly chronic diseases through combined healthy lifestyle factors —regular exercise, avoiding smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, and healthy diet! She then taught us how to do it, starting with nutrition. She pointed out that a popular fast food chain created over 20 menu items with variations of the same FOUR basic ingredients. She motivated us to simplify our own lifestyle goals towards health. This influenced me personally and professionally.
As both a physician and quality improvement and patient safety expert, I founded WellNEST Medicine™ LLC, inspired by wonderful feedback from my patients and peers. WellNEST Medicine™ empowers people and organizations to build a WellNEST for quality of life! In nature, nests are created with a specific purpose, often using building blocks from the local environment:
🟪 Nurturing activities
🟩 Exercising & Eating fruits and veggies
🟦 Sleep & Stress management
🟨 Timed mindful breaks. In both medicine and quality improvement, our best solutions target the underlying cause of the problem. The evidence consistently identifies lifestyle behaviors as the cause of 80% of chronic diseases. As early as residency, I used individual and shared medical appointments to emphasize these principles to treat diseases like hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and mood changes in busy primary care practices. In short, I love celebrating progress with people!
Most critically, people gain more control over their health outcomes towards health equity. That is what Lifestyle Medicine through a quality improvement approach uniquely offers clinicians and patients—empowerment, independence, and support.
WellNEST Medicine™ uses a whole-person and compassionate approach to help prevent, treat, and even reverse disease!
